Artists' Tools

Art Decoded's chapter titled "Skeleton Keys" introduces you to the basic art elements all artists use to create their works. These are the art tools you can learn too. Once you know them you'll be able to look at art in new ways, and even create your OWN art!

One of these basic art elements is LINE. Let's practice looking for lines in art and see how artists use lines to send you messages.

Here’s an artwork you might see on an exciting, exotic vacation.  I won’t tell you where so you can practice using the “skeleton keys” discussed in Chapter 4 to unlock its art code. Your only clue is that the objects are about 15 feet tall and on the top of a pyramid. Let’s begin by looking at a few of the art elements beginning with line.

Ask yourself these questions and jot down your answers:

1.  What’s the MOST IMPORTANT line here?

2.  What would my body feel like if it were standing in this position?

3.  What is the attitude of these figures?  Are they having fun?  Are they serious or silly?

4.  If you stood directly in front of these figures, how would they be balanced?

5.  Is the rhythm of elements in the figures dynamic or controlled?

6.  Given what you know about the figures’ location, what might be their possible functions?

Which of these scenarios best fits the artworks?

A.  They are warriors

B.  They are peasant farmers
