If you thought they were warriors you were right--Why?

These stone figures on top of the pyramid of Quetzalcoatl are standing vertically at attention. Their eyes are focused ahead and they stand rigidly with both feet planted on the ground showing their seriousness.

Standing in front of figures more than twice as tall as you are would be very intimidating indeed. Would simple peasants be as awe-inspiring? Would they usually be carved in stone and placed in a position of importance?

To see these figures you'll want to visit the ancient home of the Toltec civilization in Tula, Mexico, not far from Mexico City.

The more you learn about other times and places, the more information you can bring to your study of the art produced elsewhere. We call this background information "cultural context."
